About

MSHIVELY

MShively (Maggie Shively) is an American realism artist based in Evansville, Indiana. She was born there in 1956. After graduating from Purdue University, she moved to the mountains of Colorado where she spent the early 80’s.

Shively came back to Indiana to raise a family. It was during that time she began to paint. Helen Van Wyk’s books were how this self-taught artist began to master the art of oil painting. Shively worked for Nancy Noel whose art business acumen – complete self-reliance – left a lasting impression.

In 1999 she opened “Maggie’s Studio,” officially becoming a professional artist. She established a strong following with her originals and her limited and open edition prints. “Indy Afternoon,” her first limited edition print, became a best seller. Following that, her series of Zionsville, Indiana prints became highly popular as well. During this period, Shively began teaching painting and drawing to children and adults.

Shively moved to New York in the early 2000’s. She lived near the ocean in Southampton and traveled back and forth to New York City weekly. In NYC, she met Will Barnet, a well-known print maker, who sponsored her membership in The National Arts Club.

In Southampton she worked and showed at Mark Humphrey Gallery and eventually became a well-known local artist. Shively’s work hangs in many homes there.

Shively came back to Evansville, Indiana in 2013. She has been represented by Rumjahn Gallery and Inman Gallery locally, but her work can be found throughout the US. She climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2021.She faced and beat cancer in 2022. Widely known for her commission pet portraits, she continues painting local scenes as well.

She lives by the quote by Gustave Flaubert.

“Be regular and ordinary in your life, so that you may be passionate and original in your work.”
